Let’s say you’ve enrolled in an online class. You probably thought it was going to be pretty easy. Isn’t it a lot better working in your pajamas than heading to class at 8 AM every day? Isn’t it nice to spend more time doing what you want to do instead of sitting through all those lectures? Well, as you’ve probably already learned, online classes can actually be more difficult than regular classes because you have to be more self-aware and more self-disciplined. Here are some tips to ensure you won’t be left behind in your online class.

  1. Pick set times during the week to do your online classwork and stick with them. You’ll need that set schedule to ensure you have enough time to work and review the material. You can also review deadlines and make sure no new bulletins or announcements were posted.
  2. Set constant alarms for yourself. Whether you prefer to set your alarms on your phone, computer, email, or other devices, you’ll need the reminders. Live classes help you remember when things are due because students and professors will talk about upcoming deadlines and assignments. Other students will ask questions that may help you in your own assignment. You’d be surprised how quickly deadlines creep up on you in online classes. Think about it: if you have Algebra every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9 AM and you have a big assignment due Friday, your professor will probably bring it up on Monday and Wednesday. You’ll know that you need to walk into that class with your assignment in hand. With an online class, the deadlines tend to feel more arbitrary. You may have something due on Friday at noon, but because you don’t have a physical class, it’s easy to forget. For small assignments, set up an alarm a day or two in advance (preferably around the same times you picked to work on that particular class) and also the day it’s due. For large assignments, do several alarms so you continue to think about it. It’s easy to wait until the last minute.

You probably never pictured yourself teaching online classes when you decided to become an educator. You probably imagined yourself connecting with students week after week and stimulating them with dazzling lectures and lesson plans. Then you got assigned an online class. How do you connect with your students when you don’t ever see them? How can you put a name to a face? How can you learn who’s trying really hard and who’s trying to coast by? Finally, how can you make the material interesting if you don’t have live class time? These tips can help you give your students a fantastic online learning experience.

  1. Utilize the forums. These forums are how you can really get to know your students. Set up different threads so your students know it’s a place to talk and form a community. Beware, however: warn your students ahead of time that it’s much easier to get offended in writing rather than in person. Sarcasm or playful humor does NOT read well online. Don’t write people off after one comment. Oftentimes, it just reads differently than what they intended.
  2. Play an introductory game. Ask some serious questions on the forums like “What are your career goals?” or “What’s your major?” Then ask a list of ten silly questions, of which they can answer all (if they wish), but they must answer at least two. Make them fun, like “Who would win in an epic battle between ninjas, pirates, zombies, or unicorns?” or “What’s the absolute worst movie you’ve ever seen?”
  3. Play review games before a test. Online classes are tough. Students must teach themselves the material without your live presence to guide them. Students must then review the material without helpful in-class review or in-class discussion to help jog their memory. Reviewing before an online exam is incredibly important. Many teacher resource sites have tools to help you create trivia games, like a Jeopardy style quiz game or a simple review quiz. Have your students post their scores on the forums. If you have a verified way of checking their scores, you can offer prizes.

What to Expect From an Online Class

Many people have some incorrect notions about online classes. They may think they’re easier than live classes in the classroom. They may think that they can slack off more because there’s no teacher present to breathe down their neck. They may think that since online classes have more freedom, they can have a more active work life or social life. They may also think they won’t have to work as hard.

In fact, online classes are generally considered harder than live classes. Since you won’t have a professor in front of you three times a week, you’ll have to teach yourself. You’ll have to spend a lot more time with the material the first time around to make sure you really “get it.” You’ll also have to spend a lot more time studying because you won’t remember the material as easily without memory aids like professor review and in-class discussion. Online testing are often tougher than paper tests because a web browser holds a lot more distractions than a piece of paper does. You also run the risk of your computer freezing or other technical difficulties.

Another thing you’ll be missing is student-to-student interaction. There’s no class clown to make everyone laugh, no variety of question-askers to make the class think about and understand a topic more. You also won’t have the advantage of banding together against professor unfairness because online classes are very isolated. You may find yourself missing the opportunity to ask your neighbor a simple “Hey, when is the assignment due?” or “What chapters do we have to read for tomorrow?”

Deadlines are another huge issue with online classes. You won’t have a professor to stand at the front of the room and say, “Remember, class, your paper is due in two weeks, so start thinking about it now.” If your online professor is a good one, they’ll probably send out emails, but it still won’t be as much in the forefront of your mind as your other live classes.

Be sure you’re prepared for the realities of an online class before you enroll in one.

As of 2006 3.5 million students and in the past 4 years it rose 14 percent. there also say that by the time 2014 get here it will rise to over 80 percent will use online education. Online education or what some call E-learning is primarily used in kindergarten through 12th grades, and in college. It usually happens in a trditional classroom and some are allowed to do it at home or other places. In the early 1950′s online education was experimented with in elementary school in reading and math as the subject. In 1993 came along the online lectures that with the help of some software and a professor created whats called virtual instructional classrom environment in science, from then on jit just kept getting better and better. With online education you can study just about anything and can do your schooling just about anywhere you can get internet. so if you were an online student and you want to go to a starbuck or dunkin donuts for coffee you can still learn while sitting there enjoying your Coffee.
